Brazilian city states Mestizo Day holiday

The Brazilian municipality of Autazes, located about 100 km east of the city of Manaus, in the northern state of Amazonas, established an holiday for Mestizo Day, which is celebrated annually on June 27. The Mestizo Day (Mixed Race Day) is official date in the states of Amazonas, Roraima and Paraiba and the cities of Manaus and Boa Vista; the holiday in Autazes is the first in the country. The bill, prepared by the representatives João J. da Silva de Oliveira and Heverton Marcelo A. dos Santos  was approved unanimously by the City Council and sanctioned without vetoes by Mayor Raimundo Wanderlan Penalber Sampaio. The  holiday was a demand of the Mestizo community in the city, organized in the local branch of the Mestizo Nation Movement. The Mestizo people of the Autazes are suffering under the threat of ethnic cleansing due to the possibility of the creation and expansion of Indigenous lands in the municipality by FUNAI – National Indian Foundation.
