Mixed emotions over a word used to classify race on the 2010 census form

When filling out the race section of the 2010 Census form, you will notice that the word “Negro” is included along side “Black” and “African American.“

The Census Bureau says it added the word to make the form more inclusive of all generations, because they say some people still identify with the term.

We spoke with several people at Unlimited Cuts and Styles in Mount Pleasant, who say they are not offended by the word, but they do believe it is outdated and should be removed.

The Census Bureau says the the word “Negro” has been used on past forms, and the new form was approved by Congress more than a year ago.
