A meeting at the State Department of Justice, Human Rights and Citizenship (Sejusc) on Wednesday (5), intended to discuss issues recently approved in racial conference in Manaus ended in shouting match when a woman, telling she was an Indian, did not accept the suggestion that Mestizos and caboclos were included in the same draft text which were already listed Negros and traditional communities.
The woman said “Indian with shame in face will never be Mestizo, because Mestizo is not race. Mestizo does not exist”. The statement has created enormous malaise between participants of the meeting and angered members of organizations Nação Mestiça, Associação dos Caboclos e Ribeirinhos da Amazônia (ACRA) and others that interact in the discussions.
According to the president of the Nação Mestiça, Helderli Castro, the Mestizo is recognized by law as an ethnic-racial group by the States of Amazonas, Roraima and Paraiba, and therefore the entity will notify the occurred in Sejusc and ask Prosecutor’s measures.
